What makes paediatric hepatology research distinct from adult hepatology?

The disease mix and the growth dimension. Neonatal cholestasis, biliary atresia, metabolic and storage liver disease, and Wilson disease dominate the paediatric caseload, none of which feature significantly in adult practice. Growth, neurodevelopmental outcome and the transition to adult services are outcomes that do not exist in the adult version of the specialty.

What consent applies to paediatric hepatology research?

Written parental consent for every participant, with assent sought from children who can understand. Studies involving infants or children with significant cognitive impairment may require particular care over how consent is obtained and documented.
