What makes paediatric gastroenterology research distinct?

Growth is an outcome in every study. A child with malabsorption, chronic liver disease or inflammatory bowel disease is failing to grow, and height and weight standard deviation scores respond to treatment in a way no adult equivalent does. Any protocol in this specialty that omits anthropometry is missing its most sensitive and cheapest outcome measure.

Is paediatric endoscopy available for research?

At the centres that offer this superspecialty, yes, but volumes are far lower than in adult practice and the indications narrower.
