What outcomes are realistic in a heart failure fellowship thesis?

Thirty-day readmission, in-hospital mortality, biomarker change at a defined interval, echocardiographic parameters before and after treatment, guideline-directed therapy prescription rates, and functional class change at six weeks. Long-term transplant survival and mortality reduction with device therapy need years.

Which biomarkers are standard in heart failure research?

N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide and brain natriuretic peptide are the accepted markers and their specific assay and units should be named in the protocol. Troponin is measured routinely in decompensation. Novel markers require laboratory agreement before committing and are generally not advisable for a fellowship thesis.

What sample size is realistic in heart failure?

A unit admitting two hundred or more heart failure patients a year can support a meaningful observational study. For device therapy and advanced heart failure work, numbers are smaller, and those should be planned as descriptive series covering every patient managed during the fellowship period.

How is a thesis topic different from a thesis protocol?
