Technical success at the index procedure, clinical response at a defined imaging or laboratory follow-up, complication rates graded on an established classification, and procedural metrics such as fluoroscopy time and contrast volume. Procedural records already contain most of this data, which means many studies can be done retrospectively without any additional patient contact.

Can retrospective studies use existing imaging data?

Yes, and it is the most practical design for most interventional radiology questions. Archived imaging already contains the pre and post-procedure appearances, and the report and procedure log contain indication, technique and immediate outcome. Ethics approval for retrospective use of patient data is still required, and anonymisation of images before research analysis should be stated in the protocol.

What sample size is realistic in interventional radiology?

A busy unit performing several hundred procedures a year can support one to two hundred cases over eighteen months for common interventions.
