Choosing a Paediatric Endocrinology thesis topic

Why is growth such a common outcome in paediatric endocrinology research?

Because it is objective, continuously measurable, and responds to almost every endocrine disturbance. Height velocity, height standard deviation score, bone age and mid-parental height comparison are all calculable from measurements a clinic already takes, need no additional cost, and can be assessed at six month intervals within a residency.

What consent applies to research on children with endocrine disorders?

Parental consent throughout, with assent from children able to understand. Studies touching on puberty, body image, disorders of sexual development or obesity need particular care over how questions are worded and where the examination is conducted. Ethics committees examine the privacy arrangements for pubertal staging closely, and the protocol should describe them.

What sample size is realistic in paediatric endocrinology?

How is a thesis topic different from a thesis protocol?

The topic is the title — the question a study sets out to answer, together with the population and the design. The protocol is the full document built around it: background, review of literature, aims and objectives, inclusion and exclusion criteria, sample size calculation, methodology, statistical plan, ethics considerations, consent documents and references. A topic is agreed with a guide first; the protocol is written afterwards and submitted to the institutional ethics committee.

When does a postgraduate thesis have to be submitted?

How is sample size decided for a postgraduate thesis?
