Six weeks covers visual outcome after uncomplicated cataract surgery, and three months covers most refractive and corneal outcomes. Glaucoma progression and diabetic retinopathy natural history need years and do not fit a residency, so those are better approached cross-sectionally, by documenting severity and its associations at a single point rather than tracking change over time.

Which measurements make the strongest outcomes in ophthalmology research?

Best corrected visual acuity recorded on a standard chart, intraocular pressure by applanation, central corneal thickness, refractive error by autorefraction with subjective verification, and grading of retinopathy or cataract by an established classification.
