A study built on clinical examination alone could have been done in general medicine, and a superspecialty thesis is expected to use the department's own diagnostic capability.

Can treatment outcome be studied in a neurology thesis?

For conditions with short outcome horizons, yes. Functional status at ninety days after stroke, seizure freedom at six months after a drug change, and symptom response after a defined intervention in headache or movement disorder are all achievable. Chronic degenerative disease progression needs years, and studies in those areas are better designed cross-sectionally around phenotype, severity and associations.

What sample size is realistic for a neurology thesis?

Stroke and seizure volumes are high at any teaching hospital, so two to three hundred participants over eighteen months is usually achievable in those areas. Demyelinating disease, movement disorders and neuromuscular conditions present in far smaller numbers, and a study in those areas should be planned as a descriptive series covering every case in the study period.

When does a postgraduate thesis have to be submitted?

For most Indian postgraduate programmes the protocol is submitted within the first six months of joining, and the completed thesis is submitted at least six months before the final examination. How is sample size decided for a postgraduate thesis?

Sample size follows from the primary objective, not the other way round.
