How many autopsies does a forensic medicine thesis need?

That depends entirely on the department's annual load, so check the register before choosing. A general autopsy spectrum study can usually reach three hundred to five hundred cases over eighteen months at a busy centre. A study restricted to one manner of death — custodial deaths, drowning, a specific poison — may yield only a handful a month, and those are better designed as descriptive series covering every case in the period rather than as comparisons.

Can a forensic medicine thesis involve living subjects?

Yes, and clinical forensic medicine is an underused area for postgraduate work. Age estimation from radiographs, examination in alleged sexual offence cases and assessment of injuries in assault victims all involve living persons and all require full written informed consent. Cases involving minors or alleged sexual offences carry additional legal protections, and the protocol must address how those are respected before the committee will approve it.

How is a thesis topic different from a thesis protocol?

The topic is the title — the question a study sets out to answer, together with the population and the design.
