What laboratory access does a haematology thesis assume?

Marrow aspiration and biopsy reporting at minimum, and increasingly flow cytometry and cytogenetic or molecular testing. Confirm which of these the institution performs in house and which are sent out, because a study design resting on a send-out test carries both cost and turnaround risk. A topic built on morphology and routine immunophenotyping is far more likely to complete on time.

Can transplant outcomes be studied within a residency?

Only the early ones. Engraftment kinetics, early complications, transfusion requirement, mucositis and infection within the first hundred days are achievable at a centre with reasonable volume. Graft versus host disease beyond that point, relapse and long term survival need years. Transplant numbers are also small at most Indian centres, so descriptive series are usually the honest design.

What sample size is realistic for a haematology thesis?

Anaemia, thalassaemia and immune cytopenias present in reasonable numbers and support two to three hundred participants. Acute leukaemia, myeloma and lymphoma accumulate at perhaps a few cases a month even at referral centres, so a study restricted to one subtype should be planned around every case presenting during the study period rather than a target number.
