What makes an endocrinology thesis distinct from a general medicine one?
Dynamic testing and specialised assays. Suppression and stimulation tests, insulin resistance indices, bone densitometry and specific hormone panels are available to an endocrinology service and rarely elsewhere. A study of glycaemic control in the outpatient department could have come from general medicine; a study using formal dynamic testing to characterise a pituitary axis could not.
How should assay cost be handled in an endocrinology protocol?
By confirming it before the topic is fixed. Hormone assays vary enormously in price and many are sent out rather than run in house, which adds both cost and delay. Work out the per participant cost of every assay, multiply by the sample size, and confirm in writing what the department will fund.
