They are the main practical constraint and should be settled before the topic is finalised. Molecular methods, extended antibiotic panels and specialised media all carry a per-sample cost that a department may or may not absorb. Confirm what is already stocked and what the annual laboratory budget allows.

Does a microbiology thesis on routine isolates need consent?

Ethics approval is always required. Where the study uses isolates from specimens already sent for clinical purposes and no additional sample is taken, committees will usually consider a waiver of individual consent, but this must be requested explicitly. Any study requiring an additional specimen needs individual written consent.
